UNDP-GEF Kura II: Advancing IWRM Across the Kura River Basin

Regional Project Advisory Meeting

On 6-8 November 2019, the UNDP-GEF Kura II Project held its 3rd Rrgional Project Advisory Group Meeting (RPAG) in Qalaalti, Azerbaijan.

The event brought together key stakeholders in the water sector in Azerbaijan and Georgia to jointly discuss how to ensure sustainable cooperation between two countries about the Kura River basin and water resources management after the project ends; National Focal Points from both countries' beneficiary ministires, water quality, quantity, as well as groundwater resources specialists, representatives of the municipal water supply companies, experts dealing with water reservoirs and NGO representatives  joined the third RPAG.

There have been multiple activities initated by the Kura project towards building information sharing and mutual cooperation between two countries, such as regional working groups on water quantity and water quality, environmental flow groups, as well as demonstration projects and it is important to continue the established cooperation after the project ends. In the first half of the meeting the Kura II Project team represented the progress achieved so far and the upcoming workplan.  In the second half od the meeting the meeting participants were divided into groups to come up with the ideas on how to ensure the sustainability of these activities that were intiaited by the project. The RPAG members have shared their valuable ideas on this topic. It was agreed to continue this dicsussion on national levels and come up with a road map.
