River Restoration Consultation Meeting III

The third meeting on the River Restoration Consultation Meeting in Georgia was held at UNDP/GEF Kura II Tbilisi Training Center on 30 May 2018, with the participation of various representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, agricultural water use sector, universities, Kura II team members and experts.

Chaired by Dr. Mary M. Matthews, Kura II Chief Technical Advisor and Regional Project Coordinator and Mr. Ahmed A. Elseoud, Kura II Senior Capacity Building Expert, the meeting was dedicated to the River Restoration demonstration project, which Kura II intends to carry out. The meeting involved various suggestions and proposals of the possible sites for river restoration, existing environmental problems at these sites and what could be done to resolve them, with sustainability and long-term wider application in mind.

Rational Water Use in Municipal and Irrigation Sectors II

The meeting on the Rational Water Use in Municipal and Irrigation Sectors, held at UNDP/GEF Kura II Tbilisi Training Center on 17 May 2018, was attended by representatives from Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, municipal water supply sector, agricultural water use sector, universities, hydropower sector, Kura II team members and experts.  Opened by Dr. Mary Matthews, Kura II Chief Technical Advisor and Regional Project Coordinator, the meeting was led by Dr. Hubert Lohr, Kura II Water Supply and Demand Management Expert, who presented to the participants the situation analysis, gaps and possibilities of improving monitoring and assessment of surface water and ground water availability.

Rational Water Use in Municipal and Irrigation Sectors I

The meeting on the Rational Water Use in Municipal and Irrigation Sectors, held at UNDP/GEF Kura II Tbilisi Training Center on 30 November 2017, was attended by representatives from Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, National Environmental Agency, municipal water supply sector, agricultural water use sector, universities, hydropower sector, Kura II team members and experts.

Chaired by Dr. Mary Matthews, Kura II Chief Technical Advisor and Regional Project Coordinator, together with the national experts, the meeting covered supply and demand management issues and the methods of interlinking the involved sectors with the aim of optimizing water use in the region.

River Restoration Consultation Meeting II

Another River Restoration Consultation Meeting was held on 17 November 2017 at UNDP/GEF Kura II Tbilisi Training Center facilities.

The purpose of the meeting, facilitated by Dr. Mary Matthews, Kura II Chief Technical Advisor and Regional Project Coordinator, and Mr. Ahmed A. Elseoud, Senior Capacity Building Expert UNDP/GEF Kura II project, was defined as a discussion of the proposals on the most suitable sites in Georgia for conducting river restoration activities based on the recommendations of the working group on the River Restoration. The meeting included a presentation on the international best practices on river restoration projects and planning process, and a discussion of various possible suitable sites and methods for river restoration.

The meeting was concluded with a decision to undertake another field trip to possible demo-project sites. The meeting was attended by representatives from Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, National Environmental Agency, water companies, Kura II team members and experts, who reviewed the international best practices on river restoration projects, and the recommended strategy and approaches to be used for the Kura River Basin Restoration projects.

Second Meeting of the UNDP-GEF Kura II Project Advisory Group

The Second Meeting of the UNDP-GEF Kura II Project Advisory Group was conducted on 4 October 2017 in UNDP/GEF Kura II Tbilisi Training Center, with facilitation by Ms. Mariam Makarova, Water Division, Head, Kura II project focal point, and Dr. Mary Matthews, Kura II Chief Technical Advisor and Regional Project Coordinator.

The meeting presented an overview of the project activities since the 1st PAG meeting (in July 2017), and the upcoming plans. The project team presented the results of the Water Indicators meeting, River Restoration meeting and the Hot Spots report, noting that the international expert of Kura II will work with both countries' laboratories to harmonize methodology for measuring these parameters, and that the two countries will share the hotspot reports that were prepared by the national experts, so the experts know what the problem is in the other country, to exchange knowledge.

Regional Consultation Meeting on Water Resources Management Indicators

Regional Consultation Meeting on Water Resources Management Indicators gathered together Kura II team members, Georgian and Azerbaijani senior and junior experts on water quality and IWRM at the UNDP/GEF Kura II Tbilisi Training Center on 19 September 2017.

The meeting objective was to initiate a dialogue between the experts in Georgia and Azerbaijan to agree on the list of water quantity and quality indicators that can be shared between the two countries in the Kura river basin, for this information to form the basis for developing an annual state of water report in the Kura basin in both Azerbaijan and Georgia.

The participants, chaired by Dr. Mary Matthews, Kura II Chief Technical Advisor and Regional Project Coordinator, and Mr. Ahmed A. Elseoud, Senior Capacity Building Expert UNDP/GEF Kura II project, covered issues, such as challenges in water resources management information sharing nationally and regionally, made an overview of the Shared Environmental Information System Project (SEIS), and discussed common and specific water quality and quantity indicators between the two countries.

River Restoration Consultation Meeting I

The River Restoration Consultation Meeting, held on 18 September 2017 in UNDP/GEF Kura II Tbilisi Training Center, was dedicated to the planned activity of carrying out a small-scale river restoration pilot project, which can later be replicated on a larger scale. The consultation meeting covered the baseline situation in the Kura basin in Georgia, reviewed the criteria for choosing restoration sites in Georgia, including the discussion of possible sites as the locations for Kura II demo project.

The meeting was facilitated by Dr. Mary Matthews, Kura II Chief Technical Advisor and Regional Project Coordinator, Mr. Ahmed A. Elseoud, Senior Capacity Building Expert UNDP/GEF Kura II project, and Eliso Barnovi, Kura II National Expert.

Attendees included representatives from Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, National Environmental Agency, water companies, Kura II team members and experts.

First Meeting of The UNDP GEF Kura II Project Advisory Group (PAG)

The 1st Meeting of the UNDP GEF Kura II Project Advisory Group was held on 14 July 2017 in UNDP/GEF Kura II Tbilisi Training Center, with the participation of representatives from Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, National Environmental Agency, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Ministry of Economy, water companies, international projects, Kura II team members and junior experts.

The meeting was chaired by Ms. Mariam Makarova, Water Division, Head, Kura II project focal point, and Dr. Mary Matthews, Kura II Chief Technical Advisor and Regional Project Coordinator.

Discussions and presentations covered the terms of reference for members of the Project Advisory Group, as well as an outline on the project's implemented activities and nearest plans, reviewing issues such as EUWFD approach and the inter-sectoral training for the Capacity Building for RBMOs, harmonization of water quality standards with EUWFD, potential sites for river restoration demonstration project and other demonstration projects. Discussions centered around stakeholder analysis, the Junior Experts Program, establishment of the Public Private Partnership working group and members, possible objectives and timing for the international study tour, cooperation with other donor projects, and the next PAG meeting.

Stakeholder Consultation Meeting on Environmental Flow Methodology

Stakeholder Consultation Meeting on Environmental Flow Methodology took part on 11 July 2017 in Tbilisi, Georgia, as part of a series of meetings organized by UNDP/GEF Kura II project. The meeting was conducted at the USAID G4G premises, and facilitated by Mr. Ahmed A. Elseoud, Senior Capacity Building Expert UNDP/GEF Kura II project and Dr. Mary M. Matthews, Kura II Chief Technical Advisor.  

The meeting reviewed the development of Environmental Flow Methodology within the framework of the USAID G4G project “Refining EF Methodology and Preparatory Work for Environmental Testing Work Plan”, as well as the principles and main stages of the holistic assessment and components of Environmental Flow, together with the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed methodology.

Different categories of environmental flow calculation methodologies and examples were also presented and discussed, such as hydrologic, hydraulic rating, habitat simulation, holistic methods, including their pros and cons. It was agreed that it is important to seize the opportunity of developing and streamlining the question of environmental flow calculations and monitoring in Georgia, with active participation and cooperation of international projects, such as UNDP/GEF Kura II, G4G and EUWI+.

It was attended by representatives from Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, National Environmental Agency, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Agriculture, Georgian universities, representatives from Georgia's civil society sector, representatives of USAID G4G program, Kura II team members. It was attended by representatives from Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, National Environmental Agency, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, universities, water companies, representative of international project, Kura II team members and experts.

During the meeting, the participants overviewed the international best practices on Water Supply and Demand management and the use of Mathematical models, the current national regulatory framework related to rational water use in different sectors, and the municipal water supply and sanitation systems in Georgia

Resulting from the meeting and discussions, the participants agreed on the sites to be inspected during the planned field trips to check their suitability for the demonstration project. The field trips themselves were carried out in the couple of days following the meeting

Third National Project Advisory Group Meeting

The workshop also covered the regulations and enforcement related to water availability, the cause & effect analysis, culminating in the suggestions, possibilities, recommendations, ideas and discussions in the field of enhanced efficiency for agricultural and municipal consumption.

The Third Georgia National Project Advisory Group (NPAG) Meeting was held at the PCU office of the Kura River II project on 14 September 2018. The main discussion was about the formulation of the two international and five national working groups, their objectives and expected deliverables. The representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, National Environmental Agency, Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, Tbilisi State University, United Irrigations Systems Compnay, United Water Supply Company, Georgian Water and Powe Company and EUWI+ project attended the meeting.

After the presentation of the Senior Capacity Building Expert, The Georgia NPAG members discussed the statust of the water code and the rcent updates related to water sector in Georgia. Additionally, EUWI+ representative Zurab Jincharadze shared their project updates with the Kura II project members.
